The people make the town.

Since colonisation Lakes Entrance was named Cunninghame, because the Entrance was not entirely open for the Lakes at the time. In fact, in 1844 it closed over completely. It became a priority of the Victorian Government to open the Entrance so the larger vessels could stop in there. The town quickly became known for fishing, timber and tourism.
